Picnics are usually full of packets. Not this one. The event? A public picnic. The challenge? Everyone coming has to make everything for the picnic – the dips, breads, crackers, soups, lemonade, quiche, frittata, chicken wings… Whatever it is we want to bring, we MUST MAKE FROM SCRATCH. For more on the October “Love Real Food” picnic click here!
To make it easy on the cooking and prep front, I’m using the circle of friends coming, to divvy up 2-3 recipes each, so we can all treat swap on the day and share everything!
To inspire everyone coming, and generally just share some delicious whole food recipes with you, I’ve reached out to fellow blogging friends with a couple of Jamie recipes in there for good measure, for some great picnic recipes. There’s no way your loot will be boring if you choose from this list and all writers have considerable followings, so you can bet their wares are rather delicious. I’ve broken it down into sweets and savouries for easy navigation, and want to send a big shout out to Lee Holmes of Supercharged Food fame, Sonia the Natural New Age Mum, Alicia theNaughty Naturopath Mum, Jo from Quirky cooking (coming to the picnic from all the way up north queensland!!), Kitsa from Kitsa’s Kitchen and Cindy from Luk Beautifood for sharing their recipes. All very talented and inspiring women doing great things to celebrate real food every single day!
Best part is, all recipes are created with a whole food approach and are allergy friendly to loads of different groups. No one should miss out on deliciousness by choosing to be healthy or having to avoid a particular food. All the images in this post come from all of our recipes collectively. With so many recipes and so little time, I wanted to give you an overview of the ideas rather than blow by blow pics – Clicking through will give you gorgeous, colourful images from each author!

Now, we don’t have to become cheese makers or wine makers between now and the 18th May, so if cheese and wine are your thing – you have permission to NOT make those! Crackers however… get into the spirit and give it a go with the recipes above or something you find on your own!
For non alcoholic drinks, you could always perfume your water with mint, lemon and various fruits or check out Sonia’s recipes in her kids party food post or make a simple home made lemonade and bottle it like this one.
What you need:
1 cups fresh squeezed Lemon Juice, strained.
1/2 cup Grade B Maple Syrup
5 cups Water
15-20 mint leaves (optional)
1/2 cup blended and passed through sieve, fresh or frozen berries. You don’t want the pips in there!
What to do
Put all into a big jug and stir. Chill for a good couple of hours and take to the picnic with ice packs / insulation to keep it cool.
(cute wedding favour lemonade bottles I found online just now. photo credit unknown.)
If this list isn’t inspiration enough, hop onto pinterest for some amazing picnic ideas there too. You could do fruit skewers, roast veg and meat skewers, corn on the cob, cold meats, smoothies in thermoses, anti pasti platters, crudités to go with the dips. Share YOUR recipe or inspiring picnic tips below and get everyone revved up for a Food Revolution Day picnic too!
If you want to come along and you’ll be in Sydney on the 18th May, click through here to RSVP http://theloverealfoodpicnic.floktu.com/
Picnics are about wasting hours on a grassy knoll, eating delicious food, drinking, chatting, running after little ones, forgetting what the time is…
Real Food. Happy Bodies.
